To me, stradling/pending orders before news release is the wrong way to trade the news.
The way i trade red news on M5 :
1. Wait for the "news" candle to close. Check news result at the factory*.
2. Put horizontal line on top and on low of this candle wicks.
3. Wait some more, that another candle _closes_ outside the lines. Then trigger a buy or a sell. Never enter before, even if the candle is screaming "buy me".
In case of a buy, SL is on the lower line.
TP is on a 2:1 Risk:reward conservatively, 1:1 aggressively.
Entering after the news gives more confidence, more time, no straddle or whipsaw, not even think about martingale, and usually an almost normal spread. The only thing to fear is a feed freeze, so get yourself a decent ECN.
Price may retrace more often than not during the trade, since many players will bank in their profits.
* Ps : if news release is flat, i.e., identical to forecast, there is no possibility to enter. Close your terminal and go have a coffee, and get ready for the next red news.
